In the exhibition -DU- (-YOU-), two independent artistic positions are presented—positions that could hardly be more connected: the Berlin-based artists Anke Völk and Frank Maier, a couple for over 30 years.
It is not the individual artwork or its stylistic characteristics that take center stage—however present they may be. Rather, the focus is on the deliberately chosen title -DU-. At its core lies the fundamental human experience that we do not come to know ourselves, the world—or even art—through retreating into the I, but only through encounter, through the You. In this exhibition, you becomes more than just a metaphor for relationship; it becomes a conceptual space for exploring difference, closeness, reflection, and individuality.
The works on display reveal two distinct approaches—divergent in expression and materiality—that do not seek to align with one another, but instead coexist, question, complement, and at times contradict each other.
-DU- is an exhibition about closeness and difference, about connection without dissolution and about the profound awareness that both art and life unfold their full scope only through the other.
